Sounds simple. Looks simple. But looks can be deceiving. Done the wrong the way and without proper attention to detail, you could be facing the ugly end of extensive repair and replacement bills and costs.

“How else can I say this? Water Damage Restoration Care (W.D.R.C) went above and beyond to restore my living room after the flood. I am eternally grateful for their prompt service. They are stand-up professionals and the only company I’d recommend to friends and family.”

“My entire carpet was flooded after my water pipes burst into pieces. W.D.R.C came to our rescue and was able to vacuum all of the water out at a really fast pace. It didn’t take long for the work to be done as the were in and out, and the servicemen were friendly and helpful. I’d recommend W.D.R.C to anybody!”

“God bless you and your team for saving the day once again! From the time of my initial call until your guys were on the job was less than 2 hours – tops. The use of rescue mats, dehumidifiers and blowers saved the antique wood flooring from water damage and for that, we say, “Mucho Gracias”!”

A stranger to none and a friend to all, Bill “Whitey” Dekker touched the lives of countless others in such a special way. He was guided by an unwavering faith that gave him strength when the storms of life came his way. Bill was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. It was no secret that he was a firm believer in the notion that anything worth doing is worth doing right the first time, and his work ethic was an inspiration to all who knew him. Life will never be the same without Bill here, but the memories he leaves behind will never be forgotten.

The 1930s are remembered as some of the most trying days our nation has ever seen as the entire decade was cloaked in the hardship of the Great Depression. In addition to a soaring unemployment rate, a crippling drought in our nation’s heartland only added more strain to an already limping agricultural industry. Despite the circumstances around them, a young couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was delighted to announce the birth of their baby boy on the Fourth of July in 1933. William Jay, the middle of three sons, was born at home on Walsh Street SE to his parents, Edward and Jeanette (Egberts) Dekker. He was raised with his older brother, Edward, and his younger brother, Harry. Bill was a student at Oakdale Christian School and went on to graduate from Grand Rapids Christian High School in 1951.

Throughout his life Bill was known for his impeccable work ethic. He entered the workforce when he took on a paper route when he was just 10 years old. Bill later worked as a stock boy and doing carryout for Lindberg’s Supermarket making 65 cents an hour.

With a desire to serve his country, Bill joined the Army. He served in a medical unit in Germany from 1953 through 1955. After returning stateside, Bill began working for Ebling and Sons Blacksmiths where he did custom iron work. He remained there for 20 years. For the next 23 years, he worked in welding and fabrication for Leitelt Iron Works until his retirement in 1998. During his retirement years, Bill enjoyed driving cars for Tom Stehouwer Auto Sales.

Not long after his honorable discharge from the Army he returned to Grand Rapids. Whitey married Alicia 'Lish' VenHuizen in November of 1958. From this union came his two sons, Jeff and Greg. Although his marriage later ended in divorce, Bill was forever grateful for his two wonderful sons.

New and exciting days were in store for Bill when he met Mildred Tamminga through mutual friends. After dating for one-and-a-half years, Bill married his sweetheart on October 27, 1967, in the chapel of Central Reformed Church in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together they welcomed two children into their hearts and home: Mike and Mary. They also had an infant daughter that passed away shortly after birth.

As a father Bill spent countless hours playing various sports with his children. In addition, there were camping outings with the Cadets, tobogganing, bowling with the family on Thanksgiving, and biking together. Whitey was a longtime volunteer for the National 24 Hour Bike Challenge, which Mike and Mary were also involved in. He was very supportive in everything his children and grandchildren did and attended ALL of their church and school activities.

Through the years, Whitey enjoyed numerous things. He was active in his church, Fuller Avenue Christian Reformed Church, serving as a Calvinist Cadet counselor for many years as well as holding the offices of elder and deacon. Whitey additionally served as an usher and played on the church softball team. When he was younger, he enjoyed pheasant hunting and model rocket building. In addition, he also enjoyed Southern gospel and country music. Whitey loved sailing with his longtime friend, Jim Clausing, and water skiing on Green Lake with his brother Harry. As his family can attest, he had a wealth of tools and used his creativity to fabricate many useful and unique items. The Fourth of July was traditionally spent at the White Caps game celebrating his birthday. Whitey also enjoyed following the Detroit Tigers.

The things that made Whitey a man all his own are endless. He was a man whose actions continually spoke louder than his words, and he was mindful of everything he did. Whitey also meant what he said and was not one to beat around the bush. He was never a stranger to anyone for very long, and with his outgoing personality, he made friends with ease. Whitey was occasionally thought to resemble Abraham Lincoln because of his beard.

In 2002 Bill had heart bypass surgery. On Monday, September 16, 2013, he suffered a massive heart attack from which he passed away and went to be with his Lord and Saviour.
